The new wing, also designed by Pei, had more than 230,000 sq. toes of exhibition space, initially housing collections of European painting, ornamental arts, and Islamic art. Three glass-roofed interior courtyards displayed French sculpture and historic Assyrian artworks. The museum’s expanding collection of Islamic art later moved into its personal helpful site wing , for which Italian architects Mario Bellini and Rudy Ricciotti enclosed one other interior courtyard beneath an undulating gold-coloured roof made from glass and metal. Heiress to the Pace salsa fortune, Linda Pace, had a dream to create a free museum where she may exhibit her art assortment.
